Index Tutorial

This tutorial will show you how to easily manage your Indexes using Database Schema Designer.

• Add / Edit an Index

  1. If Adding a new Index:

     There are a number of methods to create a new Index Constraint.   Choose the one you are most comfortable with:

     • Open Manage Indexes screen and click the "Add" button.   See Manage Schema Objects Tutorial
     • Open the Table's properties, select the Indexes Tab then press the Add button.   See Edit Table Tutorial
     • Select "Insert -> Index" from the main menu.
       
     • Right Click the Schema and select "New -> Index -> Without selected Table" for a blank Index.
       
     • Right Click the Schema and select "New -> Index -> With selected Tables" for a Index populated with the selected Tables.
       
     • Use the keyboard command "Ctrl+I" to add a blank Index.
     • Use the keyboard command "Ctrl+Shift+I" to add a Index populated with the selected Tables.

     If Editing an existing Index:

     There are a number of methods to edit an existing Index.   Choose the one you are most comfortable with:

     • Open Manage Index screen and click the "Edit" button with the Index selected.   See Manage Schema Objects Tutorial
     • Open the Table's properties, select the Indexes Tab, choose the Index in the list then press the Edit button.   See Edit Table Tutorial
  2. Editing Index Properties
     • Select the Parent Table.
       * The Parent Table lists will only be available when adding a new Index to the Schema.   If you are editing an existing Index, this lists will be disabled.
       
     • Setup the Index Name as required.   See Object Names for more information.
     • Use the buttons on the right to Add or Remove Indexed Columns.
       
     • Use the buttons on the left to adjust the order of your Indexed Columns.

     • By default the Columns you add are sorted Ascending.   Check a Column if you want it sorted descending.
       
     • By default a new Index will be non-Clustered.   Select the Clustered if required.
       * Since a Table can have only 1 Clustered Index, you may be prompted to confirm this action before proceeding.
       
  3. Click OK to submit your changes.
     - OR -
     Click Cancel to discard your settings.
• Delete a Index

  There are a number of methods to delete a Index from the Schema.  Choose the one you are most comfortable with:

  • Open the Manage Indexes screen and click Delete with the Index selected.   See Manage Schema Objects Tutorial
  • Open the Table's properties, select the Indexes Tab, choose the Index in the list then press the Delete button.   See Edit Table Tutorial
  • Delete the Index's Parent Table.   See Delete Table Tutorial
